For the company Three Ships, where I currently work part time as an employee, I did a couple of projects in which digital business illustrations were used. I made these illustrations using Adobe Illustrator and Procreate on the iPad.

Isometric illustrations within Three Ships Academy

I made a series of illustrations for an internal introductory training programme for new employees of Three Ships. These illustrations are in support of getting to know the business processes within Three Ships. The training programme is still under development.

Approach

For this project I started to make a moodboard to determine which style of illustration would fit well with this training. For this purpose I researched which illustration styles exist and for what purpose and how they are used in other projects.

I chose three styles that I thought would fit best with the project and the company. I placed the examples in this moodboard and made a small illustration myself to show how the style could fit within the project.

In the end the choice was made to use the isometric style (right side). This style was found to be the most appropriate for business illustrations.

I then proceeded to work out the illustrations in the isometric style based on a description of the four chapters of the training. For this I used Adobe Illustrator. In the design I also took into account the colours used within the company: the blue colours from the logo and the colours belonging to the Cumlaude products for which Three Ships is known (learning, publishing, academy and webshop).

For each illustration there have been 2 to 3 review rounds, in which the wishes of the project team have been applied.

Illustrations for e-learning modules meat certificate holders Curaçao

On behalf of the organisation Veterinary Affairs in Curaçao, two modules are being developed with regard to regulations and practices for meat certificate holders (such as butchers and supermarkets). Within the modules I have created illustrations in a simple drawing style to support the text.

Approach

The project leader wanted illustrations in a simple drawing style. Since the text contains a lot of instructions and procedures, I found it interesting and appropriate to make correct/incorrect illustrations as used in for example an Ikea manual.

I started with the correct/incorrect illustration idea and made a number of black and white sketches for part of the text. I used the app called Procreate on the iPad. I showed the sketches to the project team for feedback and they were immediately enthusiastic about the concept.

I then turned the sketches into final illustrations. These were added to the e-learning module after a review round. The illustrations within the e-learning module were shared with the client. The client was also enthusiastic about the design, however some colour was missing. So I added a number of spot colours to make the illustrations more vivid.

After the approval of the first set of illustrations I continued with a new set for the 2nd module. Below you find a few more illustrations I have made.
