Wooden shoes trails are fun and always a surprise! This blog post contains a brief description of the trail (a trail shortcut 😉), a few photos and a simple sketch to illustrate. No need for a hiking map, the info on the website is clear enough.
This time, a report about the Teisterbant trail.
My experience
Like every year, I try to go on a nice hike, preferably a blossom hike, on or around my birthday (April 12th). Sometimes it’s still too early for blossom, but today I’m in luck. The Teisterbant trail is a wooden shoe trail in the Dutch countryside around Kerk-Avezaath and Zoelen, which is located in the middle of the Betuwe region. An excellent place for a blossom hike!
I can no longer catch a transfer bus to Kerk-Avezaath, so I start with the connecting trail from Tiel. This trail is about 3 km long and is marked with grey wooden shoe markings. The part in Tiel takes me through Elzenpasch Park, which looks mysterious in the mist. Then I walk across a bridge out of the city and into the town of Kerk-Avezaath. This is not the most pleasant part, as it is very busy with cyclists. And because of the mist, they cannot see me very well.
I arrive safely in Kerk-Avezaath, where it is much quieter. The trail officially starts at the information panel. The Teisterbant trail is about 10 km long and is marked with dark red signs with wooden shoes on them. You can extend the trail to 13 km. From the starting point, there is also a transfer trail to the Errekom trail. I hiked this trail a year ago and made a blog about it.
In Kerk-Avezaath, I first walk through a residential area where several trees are in bloom. From the edge of the town, I walk the trail counterclockwise. I walk towards the town of Zoelen past fruit orchards with beautiful blossoms. It is still misty, and I can only see the windmill near Zoelen on the horizon.
Trail guide about wooden shoe trails
The mill appears to have no sails; it is being restored. Slowly, the church tower of Zoelen comes into view. What a beautiful spring morning!
At the church, I enter the Soelen Estate and pass the castle of the same name. I had already passed the castle on a previous hike along the Great rivers trail, but from the other side.
I walk off the estate to continue with the trail extension. This trail extension makes an extra loop through a fruit orchard and past farm fields. I also encounter some cute little lambs.
Via a small crossing, I arrive back at the Soelen estate. There, I walk along a beautiful avenue lined with pear trees in bloom on both sides. Halfway down the avenue, I see an apple orchard where cute black lambs are hopping around.
The last part of the trail takes me along farm roads back to Kerk-Avezaath. Towards the end, I pass a large country house called Teisterbant House. Suddenly, I understand where the name comes from.

Final thoughts
The Teisterbant trail is a super trail for spring. You will pass many orchards where the trees are in bloom and encounter adorable little lambs. It will give you a real spring feeling!
The Soelen Estate is a lovely place for hiking. I greatly enjoyed this wooden shoes trail.
Tip: another wooden shoes trail called Errekom trail can be found in the same region, and a section of the Great rivers trail and the Betuwe trail are also nearby.
