This illustration of a vase with an autumn bouquet was given to me on commission. It is my very own design. I did use reference photos to sketch the different flowers. I think it turned out to be a nice illustration, in which I can show my own illustration style.
Approach
The description of the assignment was very simple: a vase with coloured flowers. My own idea was to turn it into an autumn bouquet. I started with finding out which flowers are typical autumn flowers. I searched on internet for autumn flowers.
I made sketches of the following typical autumn flowers:
- Amaryllis
- Witch hazel
- Aster
- Penstemon (beard tongues)
- Autumn crocus
- Plume grass
- Japanese anemone
- Sedum
- Dahlia
- Chrysanthemum
- Pansy
I then selected six types of flowers to make a bouquet: amaryllis, witch hazel, penstemon, sedum, dahlia and chrysanthemum. I also used autumn colours in the illustration: yellow, red, burgundy and purple. I thought this illustration was best suited for water colours.
After researching the different flowers, I made a sketch of the arrangement of the vase with flowers.
I have sketched the same design of the vase in large format on watercolour paper. Then I started painting the flowers one by one with watercolours. I added decorative grass and leaves for more filling in the vase.
Finally, I added the vase and the table to complete the illustration.
Details illustration
The illustration was made on Hahnemühle 300 grams cold-pressed watercolour paper in A4 size. The size of the illustration with frame is 35 x 45 cm. I chose a dark brown frame because it matches the interior of the client and also the table in the illustration. Because many different colours were used, I added a light colour passe-partout.
