As the first official commission for my company ColourFlux Studio, I made this dog portrait. I was asked to make a portrait of two flat coated retrievers called Cayla (front) and Fenna (back). This was a really nice challenge, because I hadn’t made an animal portrait before.
The assignment was to make a portrait on A4 size of these beautiful dogs. I used a reference photo of the client. In the background of the photo you can also see a piece of tiled floor, as desired by the client I extended the wall in the painting.
Test version
Because I had never made a dog portrait before, I first made a test version in miniature. The small version is about 13 x 10 cm.
For me, this test version was a good exercise for creating new types of illustrations. It gave the client confidence in my skills to make the painting in a larger size as well. And the client gets an impression of what it will look like in the end.
Details of the painting
The size of the painting including frame is A4 with a narrow passe-partout. The paper I used is Hahnemühle Britannia 300 grams hot pressed watercolour paper.
